That's great news Rafael, best wishes. Sorry Susp, I had to. It was getting abusive. Some of the posts are just off the mark, and when people begin telling me I'm ridiculous, I have to hold my ground and flex some of the resume.
Rafael, in Brazilian music, do you have to learn how to read charts first? Brazilian music is of course about the groove right? Sheesh!

My father was a drummer and recorded/played a lot without knowing to read, he started to read music later on but it was not needed.Quote:

I think it helps knowing how to read to learn some of brazilian music, varies from person to person but it is not a necessity. If you guys want, I can post some brazilian grooves here, some charts.

If there's anyone I owe an apology to, it's you. I feel like I've ruined your experience here on HOD. It makes me very happy to see a young guy at 23 learning and getting to experience these new sensations.
And look at that!!?? You naturally evolved into understanding that reading "IS" a great way to comprehend Big Band!!
I love sitting at my practice kit, putting on a pair of headphones, and playing thru a complete CD if possible. It's a great way to internalize things. But I can't re-enforce enough going back and understanding the concepts on paper so you can break it down and see the math behind it.
But like many have said here, it's not all about the math. It is a tool, along with your natural ability, genetics, vision, imagination, and PRACTICE that will make you a great player in the style. You'll see what the great Peter Erskine was talking about when you start getting busy with working. The man is a drumming genius, and his history speaks for itself (along with the many hard working pros and intellects on HOD) [img]wink.gif[/img]
Knowing a few of the "dudes" in the business pretty well, I can't believe the amount of time they spend practicing. Especially in their development years (was another topic of conversation here on HOD). The guys that are the "greats" have spent hundreds upon thousands of hours practicing their abilities. So spend as much time woodshedding as you can at your age, because once you start getting busy as a pro, you'll wish for those simpler days again.

Were you able to "swing" the band yet with just a simple ride pattern, 2&4 on the HH, etc.?? Because if you got to that point, then you've got the "feel" for it. And you'll know because you'll see everyone in the band "nodding" their heads & "reacting" to your pulse.
Isn't a great feeling to learn a new style!!??
ps... make sure you check out the archives on here. There is a ton of info shared by many good drummers and officiantos here. Use the search engine to locate things of interest. You'll have hours and hours of informative reading on your hands.

Since I can't PM and you don't seem to have an e-mail address.
Rehersing/Jamming with the guys from Brand X right now. Currently working with Jacob and Julia (ethnic/stingish kinda stuff-played at the Baked Potato before), Dennis Jones (a combination of rockin Hendrix and Stevie Blues-have played with him at House of Blues Hollywood and BB Kings/studio city), and doing a T40 gig every so often along with running my business (auto repair). I'll let you know when we'll be gigging.
And you?? Who are you and what gigs do you have planned?? Coming out to L.A. anytime soon??
Flarob, Para, SDK etc, is what you are saying that you don't need to read to learn/play any style but that it would aid in doing so?

Yeah yeah, this topic is dead for me now. I think it's very clear and most everyone generally agrees. I would love to hear Peter's take on Groovesmitty whom I thought ripped his post to shreds. And validly so. He didn't say much and that can obviously have adverse affect on drummers who are trying to learn music and it's traditions.
John, or joesmechanic, I was just on the phone with Rufus Philpot who's a good friend of mine and the bass player in Brand X. He didn't know who you were.
I will not dislose myself on this board. I'm just here to talk drums.

Why does it have to be a contest? Why does it have to be a "ripping to shreds" thing? Why can't you just say "I wish Peter would respond?"
Things like that really bug me. I'm tired of folks not being able to express an opinion without being a dick about it. That's right, I said it. Being nice obviously doesn't work for some so if you try to post on here (anyone at all) and find that you're banned that means I don't want you on the forum. I don't want the folks on here that have basic civilized communication skills to have to filter out your lack thereof.
